How a data governance SaaS platform grew from 2.1K to 8.2K monthly organic clicks in eight months
I'm Shalini Murthy, a fractional Head of Content & SEO for B2B SaaS. Over eight months, I led content and SEO for a B2B data governance platform. Monthly organic clicks grew from 2.13K to 8.2K, search impressions grew from 715K to 15M, and average ranking position improved from 16.2 to 7.9. Referral traffic from AI assistants also grew: LLM referrals rose 25.9% month-over-month, and ChatGPT sent 172 sessions in a single month.
What was the challenge?
The client operates in data governance — data catalogs and metadata management — a category where competition is high and buyer education is a long game. They had a strong product, but their organic presence didn't reflect it. Content existed, but it wasn't structured to build authority. Key category terms had limited visibility, and there was a clear gap in how content mapped to search intent for buyers comparing or evaluating tools.
What was the content and SEO strategy?
- Deep product understanding first. I ran weekly discovery sessions and product walkthroughs to understand the platform, its use cases and the competitive landscape.
- A consistent content engine. I built a content engine producing around 40 SEO-focused articles per month, each tied to a specific keyword and search intent.
- Topic clusters. I organised content around data governance, data catalogs and metadata management, with supporting pieces covering definitions, frameworks, comparisons and use cases.
- Built for AI answers as well as Google. I structured every piece for featured snippets and AI-generated results, alongside traditional search rankings.
- Content connected to the product. Internal linking and contextual calls to action took readers from education to the product.
- Measurement from day one. I set up custom dashboards and HubSpot reporting to track keyword growth, content performance and emerging LLM referral signals.
What were the results?
- Monthly organic clicks grew from 2.13K to 8.2K.
- Search impressions grew from 715K to 15M, including 254% impression growth in a single month.
- Average ranking position improved from 16.2 to 7.9.
- Total ranking keywords scaled to 48.8K, and keywords in Google's top 3 grew from 155 to 436.
- Organic users grew 18.6%, from 2.7K to 3.2K, and organic sessions reached 5.2K.
- The page targeting "open source data catalog tools" reached more than 3.1M impressions, and "data collection techniques" passed 182K.
Did the content get cited by AI assistants like ChatGPT?
Yes. I structured every article for AI-generated answers, and the platform's referral traffic from AI assistants grew alongside its search traffic. LLM referral traffic rose 25.9% month-over-month, and ChatGPT alone sent 172 sessions in a single month, measured through dedicated LLM referral tracking in HubSpot.
What made it work?
Three things: understanding the product deeply enough to write content buyers trust, publishing consistently at volume within tightly defined topic clusters, and structuring each article so both search engines and AI assistants could lift a clear answer from it.
The client's name is withheld for confidentiality. Figures cover an eight-month engagement.
